Project’s objectives needs

Quality control is a key instrument in the production of a wide range of goods from the primary and secondary sector, as well as for the environmental quality. Chemical analysis is an indispensable part of quality control and nowadays many private and state laboratories are active in this sector. All laboratories are obliged to be accredited in order to ensure and verify the quality of their results. The quality of the results and the analytical procedure depend on the analytical methods and the techniques that are being used, while other significant features are the required analysis time, which should be the minimum possible, and the methods’ simplicity.

Until now the techniques used for the isolation and determination of undesirable or illegal compounds or organic target compounds in general in water and biological samples, include liquid-solid extraction, solid phase dispersion in the matrix, solid phase extraction, and solid phase microextraction. Those techniques either require further processing of the sample (first three techniques) – thus time consuming – for the removal of matrix ingredients along with large volumes of solvents or are expensive and time consuming.

This project aimed at the synthesis and production of four chemically modified magnetic nanomaterials, with low production cost, for the treatment of samples for the determination of undesirable organic compounds, whose monitoring is required by law or demanded by specific research applications, using chemical analysis.

These specific compounds are accompanied by suitable protocols that provide precise directions for their usage in representative matrices as well as for the range of the determinations of organic compounds they can be used for.

The products are addressed to quality sensitive chemical laboratories, research centers and universities for routine analyses and also as research support tools.

Benefits

The success in the synthesis and application of these novel nanomaterials will first of all be of great help to the analytical laboratories and the research centers and eventually the overall economy.

Regarding the level of the services provided by analytical laboratories there will be a reduction of the required for the analysis time and the release of the final result, and also a significant reduction of the analysis costs. As far as research centers are concerned these products will represent a new tool in the determination of xenobiotics compounds reducing in this case also the total analysis time and cost. Finally regarding the industry and the overall economy the recipients of the analysis results will receive them much faster thus being able to perform corrective actions for non conforming products, avoiding problems with both the authorities and the consumers and also introduce their products in the market in a more timely manner. Additional financial benefits will result for analytical laboratories and research centers and subsequently to the market that uses their services, due to the achievement of lower detection limits.
